Breakthrough with flame retardant films
With a trailblazing new development the film specialist NOWOFOL fills a market gap: The flaming inhibition of such products is improved clearly. Thus, also the requirements of fire protection are considered in a better way. For businesses of different industries completely new applications areas can be established.
For the first time NOWOFOL offers monoaxially oriented films from Polypropylene, which are equipped flame retardant. By the orientation or stretching process the films get extreme high strength: The more they are tensilised, the higher gets their strength. Monoaxially oriented films (MOPP) are only oriented in one way (longitudinal direction), in contrast, biaxial oriented films (BOPP) are oriented in both directions (longitudinal and cross direction). Monoaxially oriented films achieve an exceptionally high tensile strength.
Success of intensive development
By intensive research and development in cooperation with raw material suppliers a break-through in the advancement of flame retarding films has succeeded. For NOWOFOL this was, since long time, a pending wish. Also on the customer side - from the automotive industry to cable manufacturers - interest in such films was expressed again and again.
So far, relatively thick films – with about 200 or 300 micrometers (µm) thickness, and this non-oriented only - could be manufactured flame retardant, but not thinner films. Monoaxially oriented films are available in a thickness of 25 to 180 micrometers. Most of them are manufactured in thickness of about 50 micrometers. They all can be manufactured now flame retardant. With a film thickness of 50 micrometers the classification B2, following the DIN 4102 for building materials, could be achieved.
Of substantial importance is, that the outstanding mechanical characteristics of the monoaxially oriented polypropylene films remain unchanged. They are characterised by a number of important advantages. Thus, they exhibit a low weight per unit area. With a density below 1 kg/l they are very light, so that they swim, but nevertheless extremely strong. Also the characteristics of the films which are necessary for the stretching process, such as homogeneity and toughness remain existent, despite the flame retardant additive.
Advantages for many applications in many industries
The new flame retardant Polypropylene films bring substantial advantages for many applications in many different industry sectors. Since in the past the available Polypropylene films were combustible, they could not be used for certain purposes. This imitation is now omitted. In all cases, where flame retardant materials are compellingly necessary, there will be substantial advantages. No longer thickwalled Polypropylene products do not have to be used, to comply with the legal requirements of the fire protection. Thus, the possibilities of designing improves at the same time.
The conceivable pallet of application possibilities for such films with high strength is large. The maximum stress of the very strong MOPP films is enormously - already the thinner, but more that ever the somewhat thicker gauges - with 120 µm or even 180 µm, achieve one the highest tensile strength.
About NOWOFOL
The NOWOFOL Kunsttoffprodukte GmbH & CO. KG in Siegsdorf (Traunstein/Bavaria) is the world largest manufacturer of high-strength, longitudinal (monoaxially) oriented and non-oriented flat film out of Polypropylene, Polyethylene and other thermoplastics. The annual production amounts approximately 12,000 tons. The broad pallet of applications covers packing, technical tapes, tear tapes, carrying handles and release liners as well as special films for most different industries. From roofing membranes over die cutting applications, loudspeakers, sports articles, film labels, banding systems, decorative ribbons, up to specialities like transfer printing labels or flexible pipes. The products are supplied to numerous customers, like packaging manufacturers and film converters over the transportation industry, the cable industry and CD manufacturers up to airplane producers.
NOWOFOL, founded 1971 from the companies Brückner and Nordwolle, is today owned by 22 private partners. From the turnover, which reached approximately 37 million € in the year 2007, about 80 per cent go into the export. The films are supplied to 63 countries, from Finland to South Africa and the USA to Australia. Approx 120 co-workers are employed.
